Fix Hytale Blocky Water - NVIDIA Settings Guide

KitsuneGuide Watch on YouTube ↗

If your water textures in Hytale look jagged or blocky, it is usually because your GPU driver is trying to force texture optimization on the game engine. This is a common driver conflict that makes your textures look low-resolution and pixelated. You can force the game to use its own intended settings with a quick tweak to your NVIDIA panel.

Why this happens

The game engine sometimes struggles to interpret global Anisotropic Filtering settings from your graphics card driver. When enabled, it forces texture processing that renders water surfaces incorrectly, leading to that blocky or glitchy appearance.

Steps

  1. 01
Right-click on your desktop, select 'Show more options', and open the 'NVIDIA Control Panel'. If you do not see it, search for it in your Windows search bar.
  2. 02
Navigate to 'Manage 3D settings' located on the left-hand sidebar.
  3. 03
Locate 'Anisotropic filtering' in the settings list and change the value from 'Application-controlled' to 'Off'.
  4. 04
Click the 'Apply' button at the bottom right corner of the window to save your changes and restart Hytale to see the fixed water textures.

Still not working?

If the water still looks wrong, the issue is likely a conflict with one of your installed mods. Try disabling 'Pixel Paintings' or 'Mob Trophies', as these are known to cause rendering conflicts. If the problem persists, try running the game in windowed mode to see if the rendering behavior changes.

Frequently asked questions

Will turning off Anisotropic Filtering affect my other games?

Because we are changing the global setting, it may affect other games, though most modern titles manage their own texture filtering regardless of this setting. If you notice lower texture quality in other games, you can change this back to 'Application-controlled' at any time.

Is this fix safe for my Hytale save files?

Yes, this is purely a visual driver adjustment. It does not touch your game files, save data, or world configurations, so it is perfectly safe.
